Recently one of my friends, a computer wizard, paid me a visit. As we were talking I mentioned that I had recently installed Windows on my PC, I told him how happy I was with this operating system and showed him the Windows CD. Too my astonishment and distress he threw it into my micro-wave oven and turned it on. I was upset because the CD had become precious to me, but he said: 'Do not worry, it is unharmed.' After a few minutes he took the CD out, gave it to me and said: 'Take a close look at it.' To my surprise the CD was quite cold and it seemed to have become thicker and heavier than before. At first I could not see anything, but on the inner edge of the central hole I saw an inscription, in lines finer than anything I have ever seen before. The inscription shone piercingly bright, and yet remote, as if out of a great depth:

das freut mich ja fast, dass die registrierungsstellen der neuen umlaut-internet domains anfangs wenig zulauf haben werden - funktioniert ja nicht gscheit.

reine abzockerei, sowieso. um österreich.at zu registrieren, wäre ich praktisch dazu gedrängt, präventiv auch oesterreich.at zu reservieren (man kann ja nie wissen). insoferne gut überlegt, auf seiten der registrateure. 2 domains = 2x cash.

pech nur: wie gibt denn nun ein engländer die domain österreich.at in seinen browser ein? richtig, er tippt einfach die leicht zu merkende maskierung xn--sterreich-z7a.at ein. oder direkt die ip-adresse, das erspart zumindest diese lästigen dns-server, die normalerweise die klartext-namen in rechneradressen übersetzen (anmerkung: das geschieht auch, um bei einem server-wechsel weiterhin gefunden werden zu können). telefonnummern muss man sich schließlich auch merken.

an arabische domains will ich jetzt erst garnicht denken; da müsste man ja sogar von rechts nach links tippen, wie in einigen ländern und deren lokalen betriebssystemen auch üblich.

btw: schon draufgekommen, dass man mit dem internet explorer auf windows xp und intalliertem internationalen zeichensatz die schreibrichtung in der adresszeile ändern kann? mal ausprobieren.
